Goggins Fieldhouse -

On a night that featured over 26 combined made 3’ point field goals, the Chargers of Powers Catholic defeated the Midland Dow Chargers in a highly entertaining contest 78-68 Wednesday night in SVL action.  The Dow Chargers would open the game with a 17-11 first quarter lead but a 30-point second quarter by Powers left the host ahead 41-34 at halftime.

The second half was all Powers early on with back to back 3’s by sophomore Giselle Wolschleger building the Powers lead to over 10 but Midland Dow did not settle or go away without a fight.  Down 17 in the 4th quarter Midland Dow completed an improbably 6-point swing on a back to back 3’s cutting the lead to 11.  Dow would get the Powers lead as low as 6 but would never get closer.  The Powers Catholic girls’ held strong and didn’t blink down the stretch adding late free throws to close out the game 78-68.

“I’m so proud of this team.  They didn’t flinch when they were getting their best shot.  Time and time again we responded to one of their buckets with one of our own.  We had huge performances from our big 3 but what won us the game was the ability for some of our role players to step up huge for us down the stretch.” - Coach Trevithick

Those role players were Sophomore’s Giselle Wolschleger (9), Bella Harley (5) and Junior Haleena Abuieta (6) combining for 20 points.  The Chargers were led in scoring by Junior Kendyl Smith with 30 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds.  Junior Paige Ringwelski finished with a double double of 14 points, 10 rebounds and Freshmen Evah Smith finished with another stellar game of 14 points and 9 rebounds.

“Our kids just put their heart on the line tonight and found a way to get it done.  It was so much fun to watch them compete together and then watch them find a way to answer every shot Dow through.  Credit to Dow they never quit fighting and played a heck of a game but our girls responded and closed the door!  It’s a huge win for us as a program.” - Coach Trevithick

The Chargers will return to action on Tuesday night at Grand Blanc with another SVL matchup with league implications on the line.  Tip off is set for 7:00pm
