Track finishes 7th at the State Finals.
The 2025 State Championships will be one to remember for the Chargers. The men’s team finished 7th overall and put athletes on the podium in 6 events with 8 separate Chargers earning all state honors.
The action started off with the 3200 meter relay. Senior Leo Stravato led off with a brilliant leg to put the Chargers in front of the field. Junior Caleb Carignan ran the second leg, also running a personal best and kept the Chargers in second. Freshman Lennox Naswell took over the third leg and battled through a big pack to hand off to Bryce Gross for the anchor leg. Bryce made it 4 for 4 of Chargers running personal bests with a strong anchor leg in 5th place finish. The time of 7:53.81 is a new school record and took 4 seconds off the previous school record which was held by the team of Chandler Lorf, Myles Hall, Eric Spidle and Ethan Hamilton.
The women’s 3200 meter relay team of Grace Evanoff, Grace Murphy, Lily Potochny and Victoria Bouchey finished 21st with a time of 10:36.37. With 2 freshmen in the line up the future looks bright for the middle distance group.
In the field events the Chargers were represented by Freshman Evah Smith placed 20th overall in the shot put and was the second best freshman in the field.
Senior Olivia Hamilton led the Chargers by qualifying for the state championships in 3 separate events. She made her second trip to the state finals in the pole vault. Olivia finished in 14th place and narrowly missed making the podium.
Hamilton moved on the high hurdles where she finished 18th overall.
In the next preliminary round Grant Roberts advanced to the finals in the 200 meter dash.
In the 800 meter relay the team of Fhalinn Samuels, Madison Smith, Elise Teahen, Michaela Wolosuk ran their fastest race of the season with a Time of 1:48.95 and substantially beat their ranking with a 19th place finish!
On the men's side Men's the 800 meter relay finished 2nd to a very talented River Rouge team that featured the 1st and 2nd place finishers in the 100 meter dash.
The team of Jayce Beauchamp, Javontae Ross, Leo Stravato and Grant Robert ran a time of 1:29.03 which was just off their own school record. A slight wind and lower temperatures made for imperfect racing conditions. This is the highest a Powers 800 meter relay team has ever finished at the State Finals.
Next Bryce Gross and Lennox Naswell came back to the track in the 1600 meter run. With only one heat the 1600 turned into a slow paced tactical race for the early laps. The action got very heated over the last 600 meters and Bryce Gross made his 2nd appearance on the podium with a 7th place finished.
Naswell, who was the ONLY freshmen in the field, finished 10th overall with a personal record time of 4:24.04.
The women’s 400 meter relay team of Olivia Hamilton, Madison Smith, Elise Teahan and Michaela Wolosuk again brought their best race of the season on the biggest day. Their time of 50.88 was a season best and the 4th best time in school history and placed them 15th overall.
The men’s team was seeded 11th going in and had a tough path to the podium as they had to come out of the 2nd fastest heat. The team of Jayce Beauchamp, Javontae Ross, Breckin Cicalo and Grant Roberts executed perfectly and finished 2nd in their heat. After that we had to wait until the dust settled in the fast heat. Following the first heat the men’s time held up for 7th and another podium finish for the Chargers.
Next senior Sarah Campbell raced the 300 meter hurdles and in her first appearance individually in the state finals she finished 27th overall.
Bryce Gross took to the track for the 800 meter run and in his 3rd race of the day Byrce made the podium a 3rd time with an 8th place finish. Bryce is the first Charger to make the podium in the 800 meter run since Steve Cuttitta finished as runner up in 2000.
Next up Grant Robert came back to the track for the 200 meter final. Roberts finished 2nd in the 200 with a fantastic race. This was the best finish in the 200 for a Charger since Dwayne Strozier won it all in 1974. Austin Hamlin was 3rd in 2021 and 5th in 2022.
In the final event of the day a tired group of Chargers battled to a 12th place finish in the 1600 meter relay. The team of Javontae Ross, Grant Roberts, Bryce Gross and Leo Stravato gave it their all and ran a fine time of 3:28.26.
The following athletes earned all state honors:
Javontae Ross, Grant Roberts, Bryce Gross, Leo Stravato, Lennox Naswell, Breckin Cicalo, Caleb Carignan and Jayce Beauchamp.
