Chargers Tied for 3rd in SVL after defeating Bay City Western

Bay City Western High School -

In a huge SVL match up on Friday night, the Powers Catholic Girls’ Basketball teams traveled to Auburn, MI for a contest against the Warriors of Bay City Western.  In a defensive struggle all night the Chargers used a 10-0 run to open the game and gain control of this intense matchup.  The back and forth game showed Western leading with 90 seconds left before the Chargers went on a 5-0 run to close out the game securing the victory 41-38.

“This team really did some amazing things tonight defensively and we were able to hold their shooters in check and off rhythm all night.  We battled as hard as we’ve battled all year and everyone stepped up in big moments. Excited to see the growth of this group, they’re a lot of fun to coach.” - Coach Trevithick

One of those moments was a huge 3-point FG in the 3rd quarter by Sophomore Makayla Stewart.  The 3 helped push the Chargers’ lead back out to keep the Warriors at arms length.  However, the Warriors would battle back end of the quarter and into the 4th to take the lead but it was not enough as Senior Alexcis Parker led the Chargers come back finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds also while going 10-10 from the FT on the night; leading to a 12-13 overall performance going 92% from the line as a team.  Freshmen Paige Ringwelski and Danielle Bobowski scored all 5 fourth quarter points after the Chargers were down 38-36.

“Our young kids stepped up huge for us but there was a lot of things that don’t show up in stat sheets.  Our seniors stepped up once again for us and we needed it throughout.  So proud of this group and the work they’re doing and putting it and having it show up on game nights.  Western is a really good team and well coached and we held strong against them at the end.  They’ve been winning games like this all year and even hit the shot after the buzzer.  It just shows that when two teams fight like this it’s a shame someone has to lose.  I’m just glad it wasn’t us tonight.”  - Coach Trevithick

The Chargers improve their record to 14-5 overall with a 7-2 in the SVL tied with Midland Dow for 3rd place.  Powers Catholic will travel to Saginaw Heritage next Friday to take on the Hawks in another SVL matchup.  Game time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
