Milford Invitational

After the traditional season opener at the Corunna Early Bird Invitational was canceled Head Coach Dave Wolbert called an audible and took the Chargers south to the Milford Invitational on Thursday August 29th.

The nontraditional race start included a 'foxes and hounds' format where waves of runners started with the freshmen in the first wave, junior varsity runners in the second wave and varsity runners in the third wave.

The race was held at the legendary Possum Hollow course which is well known for its challenging uphill climbs.

The Charger men finished 6th in the 19 team field that featured some of the strongest programs in state history. Pinckney, Milford, Dexter and Detroit Catholic Central have over a dozen states titles between them this century.

The team was led by the 1-2 combo of Bryce Gross and Lennox Naswell. Gross, a junior with a trio of state meet appearances to his credit, set out in a blistered early pace. Naswell began the race a bit more cautiously but closed on Gross by the midway point. After that the 2 Chargers worked against the field to earn 3rd and 4th place overall finishes.

The 3rd finisher for the Chargers was Junior Caleb Cardigan. A big summer of training paid off for Senior Max Piper as he finished 4th for the Chargers.

The varsity 7 was closed out by a duo of freshmen and a sophomore. Ryan Rathsbury, Ben Bounchey and Griffin Solano finished together in 85, 86 and 87.

On the women's side Senior Grace Evanoff had the best race of her career to run a near personal best on the VERY difficult Possum Hollow course. Grace finished 7th overall. Grace Murphy was 41st overall and was the 2nd Charger to cross the line. She was quickly followed by freshman Mila Villarreal in 56th. Nora Murphy and Chloe Woods finished 117th and 123rd to complete the scoring for the Chargers. The Charger women finished 13th in the 17 team field as 2nd smallest school in the race. With several key contributors sidelined, the future is bright for the Chargers!
