Chargers Whoop the Wolves

A Tuesday night Saginaw Valley League Girls’ Basketball matchup Powers Catholic girl’s basketball hosted Bay City Central Wolves at Goggins Fieldhouse.  In a game that featured limited offense it was the Charger defense that took hold of the game early on as the host Chargers set the tone from the jump, holding the Wolves to only 2 first quarter points, eventually defeating the visitors 43-19.

“Our defense was really good tonight, especially on a night we struggled to score the ball.  Anytime you can hold your opponent to 12% from the field shooting and 0% from 3 that’s a good night.  I thought we created a lot of opportunities offensively, just didn’t get the ball to go in.” - Coach Trevithick

The Chargers defense was the story as they forced 32 Bay City turnovers while Senior Alexcis Parker had 11 steals.  Parker's 11 steals partnered with 18 points led the Chargers while Senior Makenna Pobocik added 8 points.  The Chargers finished the game shooting 31% from the field and Coach Trevithick was asked about his teams offensive output.

“We have to do a better job of shot selection when it comes to our offense.  We are built from the inside out and when we get good looks inside we have to be more decisive.  I thought we were hesitant tonight and that eventually cost us some points.  The girls did a a great job generating the looks we wanted, but credit to Bay City they made it very tough to execute.  We got fortunate we made enough and our defense showed up.  Proud of these girls, winning in the Valley is always hard and you’ll take them when you can.  Having the support of our fans and the Hockey Team was amazing to see tonight.  So awesome to have programs supporting each other around campus.” - Coach Trevithick

The Chargers return to action on Friday for the annual Military Appreciation Game as a triple header with the Boy’s Basketball program at Goggins Fieldhouse, as Powers Catholic plays host to the Soldiers of Genesee Christian.  The girls’ varsity game will tip at 6:00pm with JV girls’ basketball having the evening off.
