The Powers Catholic Girls’ Basketball varsity basketball team competed in the Best of Michigan basketball showcase at Belleville High School over the weekend. The Chargers went toe to toe with the Gators of Arbor Prep eventually dropping a tough game 51-43 on Saturday. Kendyl Smith led all scorers in the game with 19 points while freshman Bella Harley contributed 9.
“This was such a good test for us and we know that we were going to get a physical contest. It just showed us that we have some areas that we can 100% clean up and adjust, so we can prepare for our conference and eventually post season matchups.” - Coach Trevithick
The Chargers led out of the gate applying pressure building a 13-8 lead but Arbor Prep used a late second quarter run to take the lead into the locker room 23-21.
Powers would trail as many as 10 with 2-minutes to play but quickly cut the lead to 4 but would not get any closer than that. Coach Trevithick was confident in his teams ability to learn and prepare for the future: “I believe that this group of kids have had a great opportunity to learn here. It’s been a while since we’ve been able to face a top team in the state like Arbor Prep and I’m certain that we learned a lot about our own ability and opportunities in front of us. Time to get back in the gym and continue to improve.”
The Chargers host Corunna on Military Appreciation Night December 22 with the boys’ program. The games start with JV girls tipping of at 2:30, JV boys at 4:00, Varsity girls at 5:30 and Varisty boys at 7:00pm.
