On a cold and frigid evening metro Detroit, the Powers Catholic Girls’ Basketball teams traveled to Utica High School to take on the Chieftains in non-conference competition.
Setting the theme of the evening, Senior Kyleen Bradow and Sophomore Kendyl Smith both connected on 3’s early in the quarter that built a 23-10 end of the 1st quarter lead. The Chieftains, who wouldn’t go quietly, caused some issues with defensive pressure holding the Chargers to their lowest quarter output all season (7), in way to a 30-20 halftime lead for the Chargers.
But that’s where things all changed defensively for the road team. Powers Catholic came out of the halftime locker room and held the host Chieftains to only 6 total second half points in route to a 59-16 victory for the Chargers (7-1).
Leading the way were Smith (14) and Bradow with (11) but balanced scoring and team defense were the difference for Coach Trevithick’s squad.
“I thought our defense was incredible in the second half, we made some adjustments and really pursued every lose ball with urgency. We were led heavily by our Seniors tonight, they did an amazing job showing up on the road without a lot of preparation. Really proud of this group as a whole.”
Seniors Amaya Smith, Grace Cameron and Kyleen Bradow finished combined with 23 points, 21 rebounds, 10 assists and 11 steals on the night!
Next up for the Chargers a home contest on Tuesday January 16, 2024 @ Goggins Fieldhouse against New Lothrop.
Additional: Freshman (5-3) and JV (6-1) Charger teams both were victorious as well.
