Chargers defeat Cavaliers in SVL showdown of 3rd place

The Powers Catholic Varsity Girls Basketball team went on the road on Tuesday to Carman Ainsworth and defeated the Cavaliers 73-44 in SVL play.  The Chargers improve their record to 16-2 (8-1) setting a new season high for wins in the last 4 years.

Powers jumped out the gate early scoring 26 first quarter points behind relentless defensive pressure forcing 8 first quarter Cavalier turnovers.  After a 15-10 second quarter the Chargers would take a 41-18 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The second half would start like the game with the Chargers pushing their lead out by scoring 22 points ending the 3rd 63-30 over the host Cavaliers.  With the Cavaliers taking the final quarter 14-10 the Chargers would post the much needed result of victory.

“I’m proud of our kids to come in here get going early and finish the job.  Carman has always been a tough match up for us so we knew that we couldn’t take them lightly especially since they are still finding ways to win with a limited roster.  Coach Edwards does a great job with her girls so tonight our kids made sure we stayed locked in.” - Coach Trevithick

The Chargers would get 4 players into double digits on Tuesday.  Sophomore Kendyl Smith led the Chargers with 17 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists.  Senior Amaya Smith scored 14, while Sophomore Paige Ringwelski and Senior Kyleen Bradow scored 12 and 11 respectfully.

“We shared the ball really well tonight.  19 assists but to see 4 players in double figures and another player with two other players getting multiple buckets that’s a great sign that your team is sharing the ball well.  We’ve been working a lot of that aspect of the game and the girls are starting to pick up on it.”  - Coach Trevithick

Powers returns to SVL action on Thursday in a much anticipated matchup with the Midland Dow Chargers.  Game time is set for 7:00pm @ Midland Dow High School.
