The Powers Catholic Girl’s Basketball team is heading back to practice on Thursday after a 62-59 victory over Freeland in the Regional Championship Wednesday night. The result though was not as expected after the Chargers trailed the Falcons 24-10 after the first quarter.
“We knew we would have to weather the storm of Freeland right out of the gate after their emotional win against Frankenmuth. The girls did that and we got going and responded magnificently.” - Coach Trevithick
The Chargers would do just that in the second quarter behind a 23-4 blitzing of the Falcons taking a halftime lead that they would never give up on their way to raise a trophy in celebration.
Powers had 4 scorers in double digits but were led in scoring by Sophomore Paige Ringwelski with 19 points followed by Senior Kyleen Bradow (12), Sophomore Kendyl Smith (12) and Senior Amaya Smith (11). The Chargers only turned the ball over 7 times all game and finished the night off with 14 assists.
“We’ve just found a way to connect and play so well together these past few weeks. I couldn’t be more proud of our response and our ability to face adversity together as a team! We are so excited to be able to go to practice on Thursday. Ice baths and free throws will be on the practice plan.” - Coach Trevithick
The Chargers will travel to Sault Ste. Marie HS on Tuesday to play Negaunee HS in the MHSAA Quarterfinal match up at 7:00pm.
