The Chargers lost 5-3 at Fenton in the Wood Bat Tournament opener. Connor Kelly had two hits. The team then traveled over to Linden to take on the Eagles, a 4-3 walk-off winner against Lake Fenton.
The change of venue gave Powers a chance to change into its hitting shoes as the Chargers exploded for eight runs on nine his to cruise an 8-1 victory. The offensive production came from Kelly (2 hits); Isaac Sturgess (triple, single, 2 runs); Grant Garman (single, double, RBI); and Garrett Wright delivered a two-out, two-RBI single.
Gavin Darling picked up the win on the mound with 4.2 innings of one-hit, one earned run pitching. The relief corps of Michael Klein and Jakob Malenich retired six of the final seven outs by strikeout. All teams finished 1-1 in the tournament.
Powers (17-6 overall) returns to SVL action on Monday at Saginaw Union.
