Powers squandered a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth as the Wolves took advantage of leaky defense and delivered key hits to knot the score at six. To the rescue came Nik Stimac to smack a go-ahead single in the top of the seventh driving home Jack Dawley to make it 7-6. Jakob Malenich picked up the win with 2.1 innings of scoreless, hitless, three-strikeout relief. Garrett Wright, Grant Garman, Connor Kelly (including a homer), and Dawley each had multi-hit games.
The main story in the 14-0 win for the Chargers in game two was Garman’s near- miss perfect. The junior pitcher finished with a twelve-strikeout, no walks shutout, and
didn’t allow a base runner until a one-out double down the left field line in the bottom of the sixth. The hit was followed by a strikeout and a groundout, pitcher to first base to complete the game. Powers dominated with 19 hits, scoring in five of six frames. (The game was shortened due to the mercy rule). Kelly, Wright, Dawley, along with Fischer Hendershot. Gavin Darling, and Zander Asbridge each two or more hits.
Powers finishes the SVL season at 15-6-1 and now stands 22-7-1 overall. Next up for the Chargers is Swartz Creek at Whaley Park, 4pm in the semifinal round of Flint Tournament this Friday (weather permitting). Onward!
