Powers GBB fall in District Semi-Final
Updated on 08/27/2024
The Powers Catholic Girl’s Basketball team hosted Lake Fenton in the semi-final of the MHSAA District tournament. The Chargers played with vigor and effort but unfortunately were overpowered by the Blue Devils. The Chargers were led in scoring by Senior Makenna Pobocik with 11 points.
“Tonight we just met an opponent that played confident and loose and we unfortunately couldn’t get them uncomfortable enough to take advantage. Their players are opportunistic and turned our mistakes into points and for us that was too much to overcome.” - Coach Trevithick
Powers finishes the season at 15-8 overall and had a lot of highlighted moments throughout the year. For Coach Trevithick this is the beginning of what is the growth and foundation for this program.
“Tonight doesn’t take away anything that we’ve done all year. Our kids have played the tails off and competed to make everyone at Powers proud that they are wearing that name on their jersey. I am so incredibly proud of our group and to our seniors, they have spent a lot of time and a ton of energy laying a foundation for us to continue to build this program to a championship level. We didn’t get there this year but we will continue to put the work in and find a way to get the job done in the future. I can’t be more proud of this group and their hard work. So many good things to be excited about and to celebrate this season.” - Coach Trevithick
The Chargers will finish up the season on March 19 with their banquet as they celebrate the 2022-2023 season.
“Thanks to all of our parents, alumni, faculty and staff for their unwavering support this season. We hope that we have made you all proud to be a part of this journey with us and we look forward to stepping back onto the court next season! Go Chargers!” - Coach Trevithick
Girls' Basketball recognized at all-league meeting
Updated on 08/27/2024
he SVL Girls’ Basketball Coaches Meeting took place this Friday for all league nominations and awards. The Girls’ Varsity Basketball team finished in a tie for 4th place (Saginaw Heritage) in the SVL at 8-4. After a great regular season and conference play the Chargers were able to get 5 players selected to the all-league teams.
Senior Alexcis Parker was voted to 1st team All-Saginaw Valley Conference by the SVL Coaches. Parker was second in the league in scoring at 18.0 points per game, 6th in rebounding with 9.5 rebounds per game and 1st in steals with 4.8 steals per game.
Senior Makenna Pobocik was voted 2nd team All-Saginaw Valley Conference by the SVL Coaches. Pobocik was instrumental in the improvement in standings and play for the Chargers this season, getting recognized by the coaches as one of the top players in the league as a recognition for that influence on the Chargers girls’ varsity team.
Other Charger Girl Basketball Players that were named to honorable mention all-saginaw valley were Juniors Ali Anderson and Grace Cameron along with Freshman Paige Ringwelski.
“I’m so incredibly proud of these individual performances this season but we really did this as a group and team. They discussed how we wanted to play and how we wanted to go about our business and they were recognized for that by our peers and other programs in the league. I’m so happy for our Seniors Alexcis and Makenna as they truly have stepped up on the court for us in so many ways and to get recognized and make 1st and 2nd team in this league is incredible. They both have been able to see the hard work pay off this season and I’m so happy for them. To see how we went about our business this year and see how we were able to finish 8-4 in the league our highest finish since 2015, it says a lot about this group. So to get others nominated and selected for honorable mention is a true testament to this group's growth this season. It’s really cool to see.” - Coach Trevithick
The remaining members of the SVL All-Conference teams will be released later this week.

Senior Makenna Pobocik exploded for 22 points with 5 3FGM. Freshman Paige Ringwelski scored 9 and Junior Grace Cameron added 8 points and 7 assists.
“Tonight we played a really good team game. Our defense was aggressive and opportunistic forcing Lapeer into several mistakes early and we capitalized on it by shooting the ball well. Makenna stepped up big for us and Grace handled the pressure by finding open teammates. We’ve had such an incredible year this year and so much to be excited about heading into post season. This group is a special group and I look forward to seeing what we can do in March.” - Coach Trevithick

Updated on 08/27/2024
The Powers Catholic Varsity Girl’s Basketball traveled to Saginaw Heritage to take on the Hawks in a SVL matchup. The Chargers started off slow and ultimately couldn’t make a comeback as they fell 47-31 dropping their record to 14-6 overall and 7-3 in conference.
“I’m proud of our kids effort and resiliency in the second half but we just dug ourselves too deep of a hole but we will learn from this game as we have from all of our opponents. I believe this will serve us well come March.” - Coach Trevithick
The Chargers used a balanced scoring attack to win the second half 24-17 but it wasn’t enough overall. Senior Alexcis Parker scored 9 while Freshman Paige Ringwelski and Junior Aerika Pertler scored 6 a piece.
“I thought Aerika did an incredible job for us tonight, she showed patience and executed the game plan and saw great results from it. There’s a comfort level with our post group right now that they will find a way to get the job done. Overall we need to get to the free throw line more, but tonight it wasn’t our night.” - Coach Trevithick
The Chargers return to action on Tuesday against Carmen - Ainsworth in the regular season home finale at Goggins Fieldhouse. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7:00pm.
Powers Girl's Basketball Drop To Carman Ainsworth
Updated on 08/27/2024
The Powers Catholic Girls’ Basketball team took on Carman Ainsworth in SVL competition on Tuesday night. In a physical contest on both ends of the floor the #4 ranked Cavaliers (18-0) came out victorious 57-29 on this night. The Chargers whose record fell to 14-7 (7-4) have one regular season game remaining prior to preparing to host the District 62 MHSAA tournament starting next Wednesday at Goggins Fieldhouse. Those preparations however will have to begin with out Senior and Leading Scorer Alexcis Parker, whose season abruptly ended after a contact knee injury early in the second half.
“It was an emotional night, we were playing very well and physical all night and ultimately I felt we were doing what we could against an outstanding team. We just had too many mistakes early that we missed opportunities on and found ourselves scrambling to make plays. Then when Lex went down it kind of took the wind out of our sails and we couldn’t recover emotionally from that blow.” - Coach Trevithick
Trialing only by 7 early in the 3rd quarter, the Cavaliers turned up the pressure forcing a total of 36 turnovers in the game. The Chargers were led in scoring by Parker who had 13 at the time of the injury leading all scorers at the time of departure, but it isn’t just the scoring that will be missed by the Chargers’ Basketball team.
“Alexcis does so many great things for us that’s hard to replace and ultimately she just wants to compete with her teammates and will do whatever it takes for them to find success as a group. We will await to hear then exact injury report but I can say however long Alexcis will be out she will come back stronger than before. She’s just that type of kid. Unfortunately injuries like this are a part of our game and you hate to see it. Our prayers are with her during this time and with the doctors as they prepare and evaluate the situation. We have to have players step up now, and they are capable, but it’s going to have to be a belief in themselves because I know we believe this team can and will play up to the challenge!” - Coach Trevithick
The Girls’ Basketball team returns to action on Friday as they close out the regular season and SVL schedule with a trip to Lapeer to take on the Lightning. JV tips at 4:15pm and Varsity at 6:00pm.
Chargers Tied for 3rd in SVL after defeating Bay City Western
Updated on 08/27/2024
Bay City Western High School -
In a huge SVL match up on Friday night, the Powers Catholic Girls’ Basketball teams traveled to Auburn, MI for a contest against the Warriors of Bay City Western. In a defensive struggle all night the Chargers used a 10-0 run to open the game and gain control of this intense matchup. The back and forth game showed Western leading with 90 seconds left before the Chargers went on a 5-0 run to close out the game securing the victory 41-38.
“This team really did some amazing things tonight defensively and we were able to hold their shooters in check and off rhythm all night. We battled as hard as we’ve battled all year and everyone stepped up in big moments. Excited to see the growth of this group, they’re a lot of fun to coach.” - Coach Trevithick
One of those moments was a huge 3-point FG in the 3rd quarter by Sophomore Makayla Stewart. The 3 helped push the Chargers’ lead back out to keep the Warriors at arms length. However, the Warriors would battle back end of the quarter and into the 4th to take the lead but it was not enough as Senior Alexcis Parker led the Chargers come back finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds also while going 10-10 from the FT on the night; leading to a 12-13 overall performance going 92% from the line as a team. Freshmen Paige Ringwelski and Danielle Bobowski scored all 5 fourth quarter points after the Chargers were down 38-36.
“Our young kids stepped up huge for us but there was a lot of things that don’t show up in stat sheets. Our seniors stepped up once again for us and we needed it throughout. So proud of this group and the work they’re doing and putting it and having it show up on game nights. Western is a really good team and well coached and we held strong against them at the end. They’ve been winning games like this all year and even hit the shot after the buzzer. It just shows that when two teams fight like this it’s a shame someone has to lose. I’m just glad it wasn’t us tonight.” - Coach Trevithick
The Chargers improve their record to 14-5 overall with a 7-2 in the SVL tied with Midland Dow for 3rd place. Powers Catholic will travel to Saginaw Heritage next Friday to take on the Hawks in another SVL matchup. Game time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
Chargers fall on the road to Bobcats
Updated on 08/27/2024
The Powers Catholic Girls’ Basketball team hit the road for a SVL matchup against the Bobcats of Grand Blanc. The Chargers competed hard on the defensive end and created plenty of opportunities but in the end fell to Grand Blanc by a score of 55-25.
“I’m proud of our effort on the defensive end of the floor for discipline and assignment. A few times we missed box outs early on and that led to 2nd chance points. That and our inability to get good shots was too much for us to overcome. I believe we are doing a lot of great things but tonight was not our night.” - Coach Trevithick
The Chargers (13-5) fell to 6-2 in the conference, were led by Senior Alexcis Parker who scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the defeat. Through all the adversity Coach Trevithick saw a lot of the Chargers.
“It’s hard to really pin point something that we did well, but when teams have to completely shift their offense and defenses to create opportunities you’re doing something well. Our girls competed tonight and there aren’t a lot of moral victories walking out of this thing, but I can tell you I’m proud of where are kids are at. There was no blame just a unified approach to wanting to get better tomorrow. We will do just that; KAIZEN.” - Coach Trevithick
The Chargers return to action as they travel to take on Bay City Western (14-3) (6-2) on Friday with tip off scheduled for 7:00pm at Bay City Western High School.
Chargers push win streak to 7-games
Updated on 08/27/2024
The Powers Catholic Girls’ Varsity Basketball team pushed their winning streak to 7 with a road victory over the Chemics of Midland High School 51-47. In a back and forth game that showed multiple lead changes and ties, the Chargers used a big fourth quarter to ensure victory leading by 10 late in the game.
“Tonight our kids were just resilient. We stayed the course and never backed down and finished down the stretch when we needed to! We have found a way to win these close games and it’s been a lot of fun to play in them. Credit to Midland playing down two starters to play an incredible game with a ton of effort. Made it hard on us all evening.”
Senior, Alexcis Parker led the Chargers with a monster double double 23 points and 15 rebounds while shooting 53% from the field! Junior Ali Anderson added 9 points Senior Makenna Pobocik added 7 points and 4 assists.
“Alexcis was efficient this evening but they did a lot to limit her touches in dangerous spots, she really got going in the second half and she was clutch from the free throw line late. This was a game that we needed big plays in spots to limit runs or to push the lead further and we got them multiple times throughout both defensively and offensively. Danielle (Bobowski) and Ky (Bradow) were big defensively down the stretch for us.”
The Chargers push their record to 13-4 and 6-1 in SVL play putting them in a 3-way tie for 2nd place with a matchup with SVL foe Grand Blanc on the road Tuesday. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00pm.

Updated on 08/27/2024
On a night that recognized amazing women battling Breast Cancer and raising awareness to the disease; the girls’ basketball team proved too much for the visiting Davison Cardinals in a SVL Conference matchup at Goggins Fieldhouse Tuesday Night. Leading wire-wire the Chargers took control in the first half on the back of a 22-7 2nd quarter taking a 34-12 lead into the locker room.

“I thought our defensive intensity out of the gate was a huge factor. We weren’t perfect and gave up some openings, but quickly shut it down and cleaned the rebounds. Proud of the effort of the girls and the entire roster. Everyone stepped on the floor tonight and they all gave their all. They were playing for that certain person they wanted to represent tonight and it showed out. Happy for our girls to get this win over a rival in Davison.”
Davison didn’t go quietly as they came out of the halftime locker room with urgency and intensity going on a quick 8-0 run to start the half. The Chargers would respond back and eventually regain the lead and push it back to a manageable level.
“A lot of credit to Davison for not quitting and playing hard. She does a great job of getting them to play hard and fortunately, we were able to sustain that storm and find a way to get the win tonight. Can’t say enough about this group and how they continue to show up every day and fight for each other. Proud of them!”
Alexcis Parker finished with 15 points and Makenna Pobocik with 10. The Chargers return to action this Friday as they head on the road for a the first of four consecutive road SVL contests as they tip at Midland HS at 7:00pm.

In a matchup of top 10 Flint Area power ranking teams, the Chargers defeated the Soldiers 54-48. In a back and forth game that featured multiple lead changes and momentum swings, the Chargers leaned on their defense late to secure the victory.
“I thought our girls played with so much passion and energy on the defensive end of the floor and down the stretch we forced them into turnovers that were a direct result of our relentless pressure on the defensive end and in transition. I thought our team stepped up in a big way to help defend our home floor and secure the victory. Mission accomplished.” - Coach Ryan Trevithick
The Chargers were led by Senior Alexcis Parker scoring 26 points while going 14-14 from the free throw line and Junior Ali Anderson added an additional 13 points all coming in the first half. The Chargers forced 26 turnovers and out rebounded the Soldiers 18-4 on the offensive glass.
“On a night that we weren’t great from the floor offensively, we created our opportunities and got to the line. We were able to take care of business by staying committed to our game plan and how we wanted to play. The girls were fantastic tonight at the execution of that plan.” - Coach Trevithick
The Chargers finished 16-21 from the Free Throw Line while Genesee Christian was 5-8.
“Tonight we wanted to recognize the amazing men and women of our military and we were able to spend some time with a Powers Basketball alum, Captain Kristina McCoy of the United State Marines class of ’11. She shared so many incredible stories for our players to hear and learn from and was a great example of power and perseverance through all things. So thankful that our girls got a chance to represent their own family members and relatives that have served in our military. We are eternally thankful for their service.”
The pre-game ceremonies showed celebration for active and veteran military members while highlighted by a ceremonial jump ball presentation by Heidi Hoyt, mother of Captain McCoy, while the athletes were locked in arm with their representatives during the National Anthem. Chargers Whoop the Wolves
Updated on 08/27/2024
A Tuesday night Saginaw Valley League Girls’ Basketball matchup Powers Catholic girl’s basketball hosted Bay City Central Wolves at Goggins Fieldhouse. In a game that featured limited offense it was the Charger defense that took hold of the game early on as the host Chargers set the tone from the jump, holding the Wolves to only 2 first quarter points, eventually defeating the visitors 43-19.
“Our defense was really good tonight, especially on a night we struggled to score the ball. Anytime you can hold your opponent to 12% from the field shooting and 0% from 3 that’s a good night. I thought we created a lot of opportunities offensively, just didn’t get the ball to go in.” - Coach Trevithick
The Chargers defense was the story as they forced 32 Bay City turnovers while Senior Alexcis Parker had 11 steals. Parker's 11 steals partnered with 18 points led the Chargers while Senior Makenna Pobocik added 8 points. The Chargers finished the game shooting 31% from the field and Coach Trevithick was asked about his teams offensive output.
“We have to do a better job of shot selection when it comes to our offense. We are built from the inside out and when we get good looks inside we have to be more decisive. I thought we were hesitant tonight and that eventually cost us some points. The girls did a a great job generating the looks we wanted, but credit to Bay City they made it very tough to execute. We got fortunate we made enough and our defense showed up. Proud of these girls, winning in the Valley is always hard and you’ll take them when you can. Having the support of our fans and the Hockey Team was amazing to see tonight. So awesome to have programs supporting each other around campus.” - Coach Trevithick
The Chargers return to action on Friday for the annual Military Appreciation Game as a triple header with the Boy’s Basketball program at Goggins Fieldhouse, as Powers Catholic plays host to the Soldiers of Genesee Christian. These kids keep showing up and coming to work every day. It was a fun game to be a part of, tonight we prevailed!” - Coach Trevithick

The mindset has shifted and this team has found ways to get the job done. Powers Catholic Defeats Shrine Catholic
Updated on 03/02/2023
On a non-traditional night of basketball on Wednesday evening, the Powers Catholic Chargers Girls’ Basketball team played host to Royal Oak Shrine Catholic Knights. The game was a back and forth game with runs made by both teams, but it was the host Chargers coming out on top in the varsity girls’ match up, 51-31. The Chargers were led by Senior Makenna Pobocik who posted her first double double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Senior Alexcis Parker led the Chargers in scoring with 19 points.
“We got into a good rhythm early on and Lex had 17 at halftime so that put a ton of pressure on them to have to come score and our defense was ready for the challenge. We held them to 12 points in the second half. I thought our kids competed their tails off and to see players like Makenna step into her own tonight was a ton of fun. They had to key in on Alexcis in the second half and it really opened the floor up and we took advantage.” - Coach Trevithick
Junior Brianna Krampe made two huge threes down the stretch to extend the lead to the largest of the game (20) in the second half. Junior Ali Anderson (8) and Freshman Paige Ringwelski (6) rounded out the scoring with big buckets inside down the stretch.
“In a game that we need to attack the paint, we got that out of our 3 post players (Anderson, Ringwelski & Aerika Pertler). They were really strong inside today and we needed them to be. Defensively we caused a lot of issues and disruption and I’m proud of how hard these kids have been working the last few weeks and it’s starting to show. Sydney, came in and elevated our defense to another level and that’s something she’s contributed a lot lately and we needed it tonight. She’s one example but our whole team stepped up with their energy and effort in a big way.” -Coach Trevithick
The Chargers (8-5) (2-1) head back on the road for a Saginaw Valley League contest at Saginaw High on Friday with the tip off scheduled for 7:00pm.
Powers Catholic falls to Flushing on the road
Updated on 03/02/2023
Wednesday evening the Powers Catholic Girls’ Basketball team traveled to Flushing to take on the cross town rival Raiders. The contest came down to the final possession with the Chargers falling to the host Raiders 46-43. In a back and forth game, the Chargers took a halftime lead of 23-10 into the locker room. However, a determined Flushing Raider team didn’t go quietly and flipped all momentum to the Raider sideline outscoring the Chargers’ 26-9 in the final quarter.
“Tonight was disappointed and there’s a lot of kids in that locker room that are upset at a lot of different things. I think we showed a lot of competitive integrity but we lacked the intelligence in key moments of this game and that lies on me. I need to make sure that our team is better prepared to close out basketball games then we did this evening. We’ll grow from this, I’ll grow from this and we will ultimately be a better team for this game. A lot of credit goes to Flushing for taking us out of rhythm and refusing to quit even down late. We have to move on and be a gold fish as we have a determined Arthur Hill team coming to our place to resume conference play Friday.”
The Chargers showed balanced scoring in the column as Senior Alexcis Parker scored 10, Senior Makenna Pobocik scored 9 and Freshman Paige Ringwelski scored 8. The Powers Catholic girls’ basketball program returns to the floor Friday night in a varsity only contest against the visiting Lumberjacks of Saginaw Arthur Hill. Tip off is set for 7:00pm.

Powers Chargers chop down the Lumber Jacks
Updated on 03/02/2023
Powers Catholic High School -
On a Friday night early in January, high school basketball reigns supreme for entertainment, social gathering and opportunity for interscholastic competition. Goggins Fieldhouse played host to such an event on January 6 when the Lumber Jacks of Saginaw Arthur Hill traveled to face the host Powers Catholic Chargers, in a Saginaw Valley League girls basketball competition. In a competitive, back and forth game the Chargers would prove victorious in front of an incredible showing of fan support and school pride.
“The band, the dance team, the student section all proved to be a massive difference for our team tonight. We fed off of their energy and we felt that we were representing more than just our team. The girls’ played so hard and with such desperation to ensure that they could all leave with joy of supporting their fellow classmates.” - Coach Ryan Trevithick
The Chargers took an early lead but the chess match of a game was a stalemate at halftime 30-30 with no team grasping firm control of the game. Late in the game after trailing by 1, Junior Ali Anderson knocked down 1 of 2 free throws to secure a 50-50 tie with less than a minute remaining. After splitting free throws by Senior Alexcis Parker and Junior Kyleen Bradow, the Chargers held on to a 52-50 lead to secure victory of the Lumber Jacks.
“The difference between wanting to win and trying not to lose is a very small difference that makes a huge impact. Tonight our girls made winning play after winning play down the stretch. Our entire roster was committed to winning this game and we learned from our experience on Wednesday that it takes a full 32-minute effort. Winning plays were made down the stretch by every member of our roster that contributed to this win. I couldn’t be more proud of their desperation and urgency to find the joy in victory tonight!”
Seniors Alexcis Parker (20) and Makenna Pobocik (14) paced the Chargers in scoring while Freshman Paige Ringwelski added 10. The Chargers pushed their record to 6-3 (1-1) on the year while the Lumber Jacks moved to 6-3 (1-1). The girls’ basketball team return to action on Tuesday January 10 against St. Catherine’s of Wixom (7-1). Tip off is scheduled for JV at 5:30pm followed by Varsity at 7:00pm.
The past, present and future of Powers Catholic Girls’ Basketball- Alumni Support
Updated on 03/02/2023
A storied tradition of excellence and accomplishment, the Powers Catholic Girls’ Basketball program has seen state-wide success in the last several decades leading up to their last visit to the State Championship in 2013. The foundation of the success of the program has been built by some incredible players that has allowed the program to see numerous district, regional and state championships. However, over the years as with many programs athletes graduate, coaches retire and leadership and administration changes. This typically leaves a void of connection and networking amongst former players and coaches along with traditions and values of previous teams and programs become lost. This would be a typical result for a program like Powers Catholic, however the Chargers are far from a typical program.
On Thursday Evening, Goggins Fieldhouse welcomed back several alumni spanning from the class of 1995 - 2022. A game that featured an amazing combination of past players and current rostered players coming together to celebrate the success of this storied program and to reconnect with the past, present and future of Powers Catholic Girls’ Basketball. Former Coach Betsy Kreston, spoke some words to the group on BELIEVE in what you are capable of, highlighting the ceremonies only to be followed by incredible play on the court.
The game featured streaky shooting, transition scoring and a lot of laughs. Current Head Coach Ryan Trevithick was more than impressed by the turn out and support.
“This group of alumni are amazing, they find a way to stay connected and network together and I am so honored to be a small part of this storied program. With the current roster being able to be surrounded by these amazing women and share this experience and pride of Powers Basketball, it is a really fun and incredible experience for everyone. I loved being able to meet former players for the first time, to align some of the stories that still continue to be told in our locker room. The traditions that are passed down from generation to generation are really unique to this program and unlike other locker rooms I’ve been a part of in the past. We look forward to carrying on their legacy and building on the foundation they have set for us to stand successfully on.” - Coach Trevithick
Thank you to all our Alumni, Parents and Supporters for making this an incredible event. If you are a Girls’ Basketball Alumni and want to get more involved with the program please contact Coach Ryan at girlsbball@powerscatholic.org or contact Katie Salem the advancement office at the High School at ksalem@powerscatholic.org
Lady Chargers win over Lumen Christi 52-40
Updated on 03/02/2023
Lansing Catholic High School -
Not even 24 hours after competing in the semi-final of the Bishop’s Cup tournament hosted by Lansing Catholic High School, the Chargers girls’ varsity basketball team got a big bounce back win against Jackson Lumen Christi 52-40. Leading the charge were Senior guards, Alexcis Parker and Makenna Pobocik, and Coach Trevithick was convinced, experience won out.
“Our Seniors struggled early on in this contest and in past years they would have found ways to force or to defer their moment to others. Not tonight, they stepped up and showed out in a big way. Every once in a while you need your seniors when your backs are against the wall and after losing our last two to good teams, we needed to bounce back and we did that. Again our energy and effort was a key to our success tonight but our seniors carried a heavy burden and delivered.”
Parker finished with 26 points 20 rebounds and 7 steals while Pobocik finished with 10 points going 7-8 down the stretch from the FT line to clinch the game. The stat sheet showed lopsided in the scoring column but there was balance all over according to Trevithick.
“The stat sheet will show the seniors dominated the scoring but Ali (Anderson) played huge in the second half and showed her real growth in her development, and Brianna Krampe and Kyleen Bradow were huge for us off the bench once again. The ability to win the rebounding battle, TO battle and FT contest were the difference and as a group we stepped up to the challenge.”
The Chargers move to 5-2 on the year heading into the annual rivalry matchup with cross-town rival Flushing on Wednesday January 4 @ 7:00pm at Flushing High School.
Lansing Catholic defeats Lady Chargers in Bishop Cup Semi-Finals
Updated on 03/02/2023
The Powers Catholic Girls’ Basketball team traveled to Lansing for their first road contest of the season to take on the host school Lansing Catholic High School in the semi-final of the Bishop’s Cup tournament hosted by the Lansing Diocese. The Chargers opened the scoring on a fast break layup by Senior Makenna Pobocik but after that Lansing Catholic took charge and led the remainder of the game defeating the Chargers 60-25.
“When you start off slow and miss some easy looks early every possession becomes stressed and the defense has to adapt, we took too many chances, lost our discipline and didn’t execute well enough to win. Credit to Lansing Catholic they are well-coached and methodical about how they play and are very successful for a reason. I thought our girls played hard but it wasn’t enough to go down so early and come back. We’ll bounce back though.” - Coach Trevithick
Senior Alexcis Parker led the way for the Chargers with 12 points and 10 rebounds however, the Chargers finished shooting 18% from the floor while shooting 8% in the first half. The lack of shooting didn’t deter Coach Trevithick’s feelings on some of the energy provided throughout.
“I thought we generated some good looks late, but early on we forced to much because we were honestly trying to hard without a focused objective. Once we settled down we were much better. Brianna (Krampe), and Ky (Bradow) gave us some huge minutes and a ton of energy tonight and I’m proud of them to step in and play the way they did, it was big for us!” - Coach Trevithick
The Chargers take on Lumen Christi in the consolation game on Wednesday December 28 @ 10:30am.
PCHS Girls' Varsity Basketball vs. Port Huron
Updated on 03/02/2023
The Powers Catholic Chargers Varsity Girls’ Basketball team defended their home court against a physical Port Huron team 55-43 on Friday night. The game showcased a physical back and forth style game with multiple runs be either team. In the end it was the Chargers who came out on top.
“I’m so proud of the effort our kids played with tonight. With limited preparation we had to come out and get our selves ready to go against a very physical and well coached team. We showed resilience and fortitude and I am so happy to see the growth out of this team. On a night where we struggled defensively, our seniors played a massive role in helping us secure the victory!” - Coach Ryan Trevithick
Those seniors coach spoke about in the scoring column were led by Alexcis Parker with 22 points and 13 rebounds and Makenna Pobocik with 11 points and 7 rebounds. Junior Ali Anderson rounded out the double figures with 13 as a season high for her. But it was a Senior not in the scoring column that coach alluded to.
“Sydney Patt played a vital role in our success tonight. She didn’t play a ton of minutes but her minutes were crucial as we needed a spark and to settle in she did just that. Couldn’t be prouder of her for this moment she really stepped up when her team needed her. She was ready and delivered; that’s all you can ask for out of your team” - Coach Trevithick
The Chargers move to 4-0 on the year and will host the SVL opener on Tuesday December 13 against Midland Dow at Goggins Fieldhouse. Tip off is set for 7:00pm.
PCHS Girls' Varsity Basketball falls short to Midland Dow
Updated on 03/02/2023
Powers Catholic girls’ varsity basketball team fell short on Tuesday to Midland Dow 64-57. The Chargers cut a 19 point lead by Dow to 3 with 3:00 left in the game but ultimately the game was put away by free throws by Midland Dow. Coach Ryan Trevithick had this to say about his young teams performance:
“Our kids battled and played hard, but credit to Midland Dow they made adjustments to our defense and kept us on our heels rather than in attack mode. They’re a really good passing team and that exposed us a bit with our discipline so we need to clean that up, but this group has shown us some really special things. They never quit and when they stay disciplined they are really fun group to watch play the game. We are finding our identity and as we begin to get some comfort with roles and expectations of those roles, I think we will be a dangerous team come end of the year. We aren’t there yet but we are close” - Coach Ryan Trevithick
Powers was led in scoring by senior Alexcis Parker with 24 points and 10 rebounds, and Makenna Pobocik adding a season high of 20 points.
Chargers lock in on exams this week and return to the court on December 27 to face Lansing Catholic Central in the Lansing Diocese Christmas Tournament. JV returns to action on December 20 @ Hartland in a make up game from a previously canceled game. That game tips at 4:00pm.
PCHS Girls' Varsity Basketball vs. Lapeer
Updated on 03/02/2023
The Varsity Girls’ Basketball team hosted Lapeer on Tuesday night at Goggins Fieldhouse at Powers Catholic High School. In a back and forth contest Powers Catholic saw a 7-point victory over the visiting Lightning 38-31. The story lines would show that the defense of the Chargers was at an elite level, forcing 48 total turnovers and holding Lapeer to single digits in 3 of the 4 quarters of play. However, the offense struggled to score, shooting only 18% from the floor for the game. A career night from Senior Alexcis Parker lifted the Chargers to victory.
“Alexcis was really good this evening, she showed poise, patience and urgency when needed. I’m not quite sure what the school record is but her 13 steals have to be close. Our defense forced so many turnovers and I’m so proud of how they played as a unit. To do what we did tonight is a very difficult thing to do, win while shooting that percentage is hard. It’s really fun to see how they competed.” - Coach Ryan Trevithick
Parker finished the night with 26 points, 10 rebounds and 13 assists leading a second career triple double. This was followed up by 8 points and 11 steals by Junior Kyleen Bradow. A short handed roster left the Chargers searching for energy, but Coach Trevithick found no faults with the effort of their 7.
“We were missing a bunch of kids tonight, and this team is so connected and we depend on each other so much that we all felt that. To play with 7 and know that your rotations will change and the familiarity with the game will change can hold you back a lot from growth. Tonight however we used it as our reason for growth rather than our excuse for not. Obviously we want all our athletes with us tonight but these 7 competed their tales off to help us come away with the win” - Coach Ryan Trevithick
The Chargers return to action on Friday December 9 at Goggins Fieldhouse as they host the Port Huron Big Reds in a non-conference game. JV tips at 5:30pm with Varsity following at 7:00pm.
PCHS Girls' Varsity Basketball vs. Genesee High School
Updated on 03/02/2023
Friday December 2, 2022
The varsity girls basketball team took on the Wolves of Genesee High School at Goggins Fieldhouse on Friday evening. The Chargers opened the scoring by leading 22-7 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 43-22 at the end of the half. The 3rd quarter would see the lead extend beyond 40 as the final score settled at 74-37 in favor of the Chargers (2-0). Powers Catholic had balanced scoring across the board but were led by Senior, Alexcis Parker (26), Freshman Paige Ringwelski (14) and Senior Makenna Pobocik (13) points respectfully. Once again Coach Trevithick gave credit to his defense and urgency for the victory.
“I thought tonight we came out to prove a point, not just to Genesee but to ourselves that we are going to play with urgency, intensity and competitive integrity. The girls gave all they had and turned defense into offense with our transition. I thought we did a good job shutting down their best player trying to limit her touches and make her play a stressful 32 minutes of basketball. Overall, very proud of how our girls responded to their opportunities to compete tonight. Looking forward to building on this!” - Coach Trevithick
The Chargers return to action on Tuesday December 6 at 5:30pm when they face off against Lapeer in the middle game of a triple header with the Lightning.

Powers charged up after win over Mt. Pleasant
Updated on 03/02/2023
The Girls’ Basketball program hit the road for the trip north to Mt. Pleasant to take on the Oilers in a Saginaw Valley League matchup on Friday evening. The Chargers came out of the gate hot and never looked back leading wire-wire and finishing with a 45-31 victory over the host. Coach Trevithick credited his team with providing their own energy in a hostile environment.
“All the credit goes to these girls tonight as they were their own eco-system of energy and effort. They consistently brought it play after play and we were able to do some great things tonight and it all started from the minute they stepped onto the floor. So proud of this group and their growth!” - Coach Trevithick
The Chargers were paced in scoring by Senior Alexcis Parker with 16 points and Junior Ali Anderson with 10. The Chargers held Mt Pleasant to 25% shooting from the field and it was the defensive urgency that Coach Trevithick said changed the outcome.
“We’ve been working really hard lately on our defensive urgency and tonight they played desperate and it showed. We were able to get everyone in, and they all played the tails off. We even got to see some special packages and lineups we wanted to see and the girls really responded well to it. I’m excited to get back into the gym next week and clean up some areas we are deficient but overall a ton of great things can come from this game.”
The Chargers record moves to 7-4 (2-1) as they prepare to return to Goggins Fieldhouse to host Shrine Catholic of Royal Oak on Wednesday January 18. Tip off is scheduled for JV at 5:30pm followed by Varsity at 7:00pm.
