Lapeer, MI - On a cold December night in Lapeer, MI the Powers Catholic Girls Basketball team opened conference play on the road at Lapeer High School. A highly anticipated start did not disappoint as the Chargers set the tone for the game and year by starting off 32-0 after the first quarter of play vs the host Lightning. After a competitive 2nd quarter the Chargers used a big 3rd quarter start and shut out the Lightning in the 4th quarter to earn a 79-8 opening night victory to move to 1-0 on the year and 1-0 in conference play. Kendyl Smith led the scoring for the Chargers with 30 points, followed by Sophomore Evah Smith with 21 points. “The defense was on point all night, our rotations and pressure really disrupted Lapeer’s vision and comfort in the game which is what we want. We know that if we let it be a half court game it would have been a different outcome so we had to control what we could early on. We played with a lot of energy tonight and that’s fun to see.” - Coach Trevithick The Chargers are set for their home opener on Monday vs Regional foe Frankenmuth at Goggins Fieldhouse. 7:00pm tip off with JV set to tip at 5:30pm Flint, MI - Goggins Fieldhouse played host on Monday to the home opener for the Powers Catholic (1-0) Girls Basketball team. Regional opponent Frankenmuth (2-0) came to town with ruining the opening night for the Chargers. The first quarter would be back and forth play with Frankenmuth starting off defensively very strong but the Chargers would respond with a late run to take a 14-12 first quarter lead. However, the break set a different tone as the Chargers blitzed the Eagles with a 24-3 second quarter to take a 38-15 lead taking momentum to the locker room. “That second quarter was huge for us to get them out of rhythm and get momentum on our side going into halftime. Our defense turned up a notch and created scoring opportunities for us. It was big too because the crowd got involved and our student section got loud which helps us with that energy.” - Coach Trevithick An 19-11 3rd quarter advantage would push the Chargers to the largest lead of the game at 30 points. The Eagles would respond in the 4th quarter with a run of their own but the clock ran out showing 69-45 victory for the Chargers. “Frankenmuth is a really good team and they’ve played in big games before so they don’t panic under pressure. Our ability to speed the game up was big for us but this will be a potential Regional match up and we have a lot to clean up in between now and then.” - Coach Trevithick The Chargers had 4 players in double digits with Kendyl Smith nearly hitting a Triple Double with 23 points, 10 assists and 9 rebounds. Giselle Wolschleger had 17 points on 5/6 shooting from deep, while Paige Ringwelski (11pts) and Evah Smith (10pts) both finished with double figures.
