Flint, MI. - Powers Catholic girls varsity basketball team held off the Eagles of Hartland High School on Tuesday night 60-53 in OT. The Chargers were paced in scoring by Kendyl Smith with 20 points, Evah Smith with 15 and Presley Schriner with 11. In a back and forth game defense set a tone early and often with both teams holding each other under their scoring averages for the season. The Chargers (5-0, 3-0) held a 25-20 halftime lead ultimately seeing that lead slip away when Hartland tied it 33-33 late in the 3rd quarter. Using a 10-0 run from the end of the third to the fourth quarter the Chargers pushed the lead back to 43-33, but that’s when Hartland used back to back threes to close the gap and a steal late and a layup gave the Eagles their first lead of the game late in the fourth quarter. Freshman Presley Schriner hit a big 3 with just over a minute remaining to tie it up and neither team could score down the stretch to force overtime. In OT it was all Chargers, led by Bella Harley. Harley hit a 3 in the corner and then hit a layup to stretch the lead to 5. After a Hartland 3, Harley responded back with a couple of free throws and pushed the lead back to 4, but a Paige Ringwelski steal gave the ball back to the Chargers. The Eagles had to foul and Kendyl Smith split the pair from the line but Evah Smith grabbed and offensive rebound and put back to push the lead to 7. After a layup by Hartland and a pair of Smith free throws the final was 60-53 in an epic holiday break showdown. “Couldn’t be more proud of our toughness and focus down the stretch. We didn’t play our best basketball and credit to Hartland and their program for keeping us off balance all night. We were able to get big stops down the stretch in OT and ultimately we had players step up big time for us. I thought Paige was really good defensively for us and Bella, Presley and Evah all had big shots in big moments to help us win.” - Coach Trevithick The Chargers head into break but not for long, they return to action on December 29 for a matchup against Pewamo Westphalia (4-0) at Goggins Fieldhouse. Tip off is set for 7:00pm with the JV at 5:30pm. Monday is also the Charger Alumni game with tip off set at 3:00pm.
