Powers Catholic delivered a tough, disciplined performance Saturday afternoon, pushing No. 3 Detroit Renaissance deep into the fourth quarter before falling 59–49 at Cass Tech High School in the Motor City Classic. From the opening tip, the game carried a playoff-level physicality. Both teams traded baskets early, finishing the first quarter tied 10–10, with defensive pressure setting the tone on both ends of the floor. The Chargers continued to respond in the second quarter, matching Renaissance possession for possession while controlling the tempo. Behind strong rebounding and composed execution, Powers edged into the break with a 22–20 halftime lead, reflecting how evenly contested the first half truly was. The third quarter became a test of resilience. Renaissance found a brief offensive stretch and outscored Powers 19–13, but the Chargers absorbed the run without losing composure. Powers continued to battle inside, defend multiple actions, and stay connected, keeping the game within striking distance entering the final period. In the fourth quarter, the physical nature of the game intensified. Powers remained aggressive offensively, scoring 14 points and consistently attacking the paint, earning trips to the free-throw line. The Chargers finished the night 17-for-23 at the stripe, a direct result of playing downhill and initiating contact. Ultimately, the deciding factor came in the closing minutes. Renaissance closed the game at the free-throw line, attempting 17 free throws in the fourth quarter alone and 30 total for the game. Those extended possessions proved difficult to overcome as the Chargers continued to compete through the final horn. Despite the outcome, Powers matched the third-ranked team in toughness. The Chargers controlled the glass 38–30, including 12 offensive rebounds, and forced 13 turnovers, limiting transition chances and turning the contest into a half-court battle for most of the afternoon. While the final score showed a 59–49 result, the performance reinforced Powers Catholic’s identity. Against elite competition, the Chargers defended, rebounded, and competed with confidence — lessons that will carry forward as the season progresses. “I thought our girls showed a lot of toughness in a physical game. The controlled the paint and the glass but ultimately too many unforced errors caught up to us. I know we’ll bounce back and be ready for Monday as Pewamo is a tough team and well coached.” - Coach Trevithick The Chargers (5-1) return to action Monday vs #2 Pewamo Westphalia. Tip-off scheduled for 4:30pm in a varsity only contest.
