Imlay City rallies past Powers Catholic, 14-7, in season opener FLINT — Powers Catholic appeared to have seized control of its season opener Thursday night at Atwood Stadium. Instead, Imlay City answered immediately. After senior running back Jayce Beauchamp scored to give Powers Catholic the lead with 8:12 remaining in the fourth quarter and Lincoln Rainney converted the extra point, Imlay City returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown and added a 2-point conversion to claim a 14-7 victory over the Chargers. The loss dropped Powers Catholic to 0-1, while Imlay City improved to 1-0. It was just the second all-time meeting between the programs. Imlay City also won last season's matchup, 14-13. Powers Catholic controlled several statistical categories and finished with 189 yards of total offense, compared with 178 for Imlay City. The Chargers also averaged 4.0 yards per play to Imlay City's 3.9, but turnovers proved costly as Powers Catholic committed three turnovers. Beauchamp led the Chargers offensively, rushing for 115 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. His 53-yard run was the longest play from scrimmage for Powers Catholic, and he also added four receptions for 14 yards. Quarterback Thomas Begola completed 6 of 14 passes for 35 yards. Hudson Miller added a 14-yard reception, while Drey Walton caught one pass for seven yards. Defensively, Walton turned in one of the night's top performances, recording a game-high 15 tackles. Luke Rathsburg, Asa Stenberg and Tommy Bossi each added eight tackles for the Chargers, while Aidan Corcoran and Makai Allen finished with five tackles apiece. Lorenzo Mindlin provided a takeaway for the Powers Catholic defense with an interception and also recorded a pass breakup. Powers Catholic's defense limited Imlay City to 178 yards of total offense and held the Spartans without a passing touchdown. Imlay City generated 127 yards on the ground and 62 through the air. The Chargers' biggest moment came early in the fourth quarter when Beauchamp found the end zone, followed by Rainney's extra point to give Powers Catholic a 7-6 lead with 8:12 remaining. But the momentum changed on the ensuing kickoff. Imlay City returned the kickoff for a touchdown, then converted the 2-point attempt to take a 14-7 lead. The Chargers had an opportunity to respond, but Imlay City intercepted a Powers pass on the subsequent drive and held on for the victory. Powers Catholic, led by head coach Jeremy Ferman, will look to rebound in Week 2 when it returns to Atwood Stadium to host Detroit East English Village. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3.
