September 1, 2026 CORUNNA, Mich. — After setting the event record a year ago, Lennox Naswell got the season started in championship fashion for Flint Powers Catholic, and his teammates made sure the Chargers finished the job Tuesday at the Corunna Earlybird Invitational. Naswell won the 5,000-meter Medium School Boys race in 16 minutes, 11.35 seconds, leading Powers Catholic to the team championship with 35 points at the Shiawassee County Fairgrounds. The Chargers placed five runners among the top 13 finishers and finished 16 points ahead of runner-up Owosso, which scored 51 points. Williamston was third with 56. North Branch, Corunna, Goodrich, Chesaning, Imlay City and Fowlerville rounded out the nine-team field. Naswell, a junior, separated himself from the field early and crossed the finish line 26.74 seconds ahead of Williamston's Duncan Palmer, who finished second in 16:38.09. Behind Naswell, Powers' pack provided the depth that ultimately decided the team race. Senior Ben Bouchey finished fifth in 17:28.63, followed by junior Ryan Rathsburg in seventh at 17:36.18. Senior Griffin Solano was ninth in 17:45.09, and senior Alexander Iordanou completed the Chargers' scoring five with a 13th-place finish in 18:22.59. The five Powers scorers finished with an average time of approximately 17:25, and the Chargers' fifth runner crossed the line nearly two minutes ahead of Owosso's fifth scorer. That combination of front-end strength and depth gave Powers a comfortable margin in the team standings. The Chargers also received strong efforts from their remaining runners. Freshman Daniel Newman placed 22nd in 19:09.11, followed by senior Nick York in 24th at 19:21.75 and junior Charlie Penneau in 25th at 19:38.63. Freshman Nolan Campbell was 28th in 19:46.17, while sophomore Noah Tiong finished 30th in 19:53.72. Powers continued to put runners across the finish line throughout the field, with Joseph Cecchini, Cy Gerke and Miles Muxlow among the Chargers finishing in the top 36. The performance gives Powers an impressive opening statement as the Chargers begin the season with a balanced lineup capable of scoring well at both ends of the race. For Naswell, meanwhile, the season began exactly where a team leader would want it to — at the front of the field and with his team at the top of the standings. Unfortunately, due to weather and heat-related concerns, the girls races was canceled. The Powers Catholic boys will look to build on Tuesday's performance as the cross country season continues.
