September 3, 2026 FLINT, Mich. — A wild final sequence erased Powers Catholic's hopes for its first victory of the season Thursday night as Detroit East English Village escaped Atwood Stadium with a 26-20 victory over the Chargers. In the first meeting between the two schools, the Bulldogs improved to 2-0, while Powers fell to 0-2. The Chargers appeared to have seized the momentum late. Powers scored a touchdown to tie the game at 20 with 31 seconds remaining, but East English Village answered in dramatic fashion on the ensuing kickoff. The Bulldogs initially fumbled the return, but an East English Village player recovered the loose ball and lateraled it to Kelahn Thorns, who raced the rest of the way for the game-winning touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the Bulldogs with a six-point lead. Powers had opportunities throughout a game marked by big plays and momentum swings. East English Village struck first on a 48-yard touchdown pass in the opening quarter. The extra-point attempt failed, giving the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead. The Chargers answered in the second quarter when Makai Allen scored on a 2-yard touchdown run. The extra point gave Powers its first lead, 7-6. East English Village responded with a 76-yard touchdown pass later in the quarter to regain the lead, 12-7. The Chargers swung the momentum again in the third quarter when a bad Bulldogs punt snap ended up in the East English Village end zone. Allen recovered the ball for a touchdown, and the extra point put Powers back in front, 14-12. The lead was short-lived. East English Village answered with a 41-yard touchdown pass and converted a two-point attempt to take a 20-14 advantage entering the fourth quarter. Powers continued to battle and pulled even late in the game. Quarterback Thomas Begola connected with Allen for a 20-yard touchdown pass, tying the score at 20 after the extra point attempt was unsuccessful. But the Chargers' celebration was brief as the Bulldogs produced the decisive kickoff return moments later. Allen was a standout on both sides of the ball for Powers. He rushed for 71 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries and caught three passes for 38 yards and a touchdown. He also recovered the bad punt snap in the end zone for another touchdown and recorded an interception on defense. Thomas completed 4 of 10 passes for 48 yards and a touchdown. Hudson Miller added 67 rushing yards on 15 carries, while Jayce Beauchamp contributed 56 yards on 11 carries. Despite running 56 offensive plays, Powers was held to 252 total yards. East English Village generated 333 yards on just 39 plays, including 222 passing yards and three touchdown passes. The Bulldogs committed five turnovers, however, compared with one for Powers, helping the Chargers remain within striking distance throughout the contest. East English Village's explosive passing game ultimately made the difference. The Bulldogs completed 11 of 19 passes for 222 yards and averaged 8.5 yards per offensive play. Powers will look to regroup after a heartbreaking finish as the Chargers continue their search for their first victory of the season.
