BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — Powers Catholic battled difficult weather conditions and a challenging course to finish seventh at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 girls golf state finals Friday and Saturday at Katke Golf Course on the campus of Ferris State University. The Chargers posted a two-day team total of 792, finishing with rounds of 392 and 400 for a score of 216 over par. NorthPointe Christian won the Division 3 championship with a 721, followed by Montague at 758 and Lansing Catholic at 762. Friday’s opening round was interrupted by heavy rain and wind, forcing a suspension after just two holes. Play resumed at 1 p.m., adding to the challenge of a championship weekend that tested the competitors’ ability to manage both the course and the conditions. Junior McKenna Kelly led Powers with a two-day total of 183, finishing tied for 20th individually. Kelly opened with a 95 on Friday before improving by seven strokes with an 88 on Saturday, finishing 39 over par. Junior Laney Applegate was next for the Chargers, placing 49th with a 201. Applegate carded rounds of 100 and 101, finishing 57 over par. Senior Emma Darmafall finished 56th with a two-day total of 205. Darmafall recorded a 103 in the opening round and followed with a 102 on Saturday to finish 61 over par. Sophomore Isabelle Mark placed 63rd with a 208. Mark opened with a 94 on Friday but faced a difficult second round, finishing with a 114 for the tournament and a total of 64 over par. Senior Emersyn Granata rounded out the Powers lineup, finishing 72nd with a two-day score of 213. Granata shot 104 in the first round and 109 in the second to finish 69 over par. The state finals marked the conclusion of the season for coach Bridget Rabine’s Chargers, who entered the championship weekend with momentum after winning the Division 3 Regional 18 title at Cracklewood Golf Club in Macomb. Powers shot a season-best 370 at regionals, finishing nine strokes ahead of runner-up Pontiac Notre Dame Prep to secure its place in the state finals. The Chargers were seeking their seventh MHSAA state championship, having last won the title in 2018. Powers also returned three golfers from last year’s state-finals lineup, bringing valuable championship experience into the 2026 postseason. Although the Chargers fell short of their championship goal, their regional title and return to the state finals capped another season of competition for the Powers Catholic girls golf program.
