Paul Stravato named new Girls Soccer Coach
Powers Catholic Director of Athletics Mike Watson is pleased to announce the hiring of Paul Stravato as our new head girls soccer coach. Stravato replaces Art Moody who had been a part of the girls soccer program at Powers for 17 years and stepped down at the end of November. Stravato also serves as our boys head soccer coach and continually leads the boys program to district and regional appearances and titles. Paul brings a wealth of experience to our girls program. As a teacher in the building he knows all of our students already who would have an interest in competing for the soccer team and program. Paul can hit the ground running with our program with no learning curve about girls’ soccer, what we stand for at Powers and how we should represent ourselves to the public. Coach Stravato will begin his coaching responsibilities immediately with girls soccer as he prepares girls interested in playing soccer this spring for the upcoming winter conditioning workouts

Please help our Athletic Department in welcoming our new softball coach, Morgan Hill! Morgan is a graduate of Kearsley High School participating in Varsity volleyball and softball during her high school career. She was a member of a league and district title as a Varsity softball player from 2008 to 2011. Morgan continued her education at Oakland University where she graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in psychology and participated as a four year Division 1 softball player as the starting 3rd basemen in the regular season championship, conference tournament championship and NCAA appearance in 2015. Morgan furthered her education at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and earned a Masters of Arts in Psychology and is a Licensed and Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Powers Catholic Athletic Director Mike Watson is pleased to announce the return of our Boys Head Lacrosse Coach Matthew Gregson. Matt was an ’06 graduate of Powers Catholic and was an accomplished 3 sport athlete in football, hockey, and lacrosse. A member of the ’05 State Championship Football team and the ’05 State Runner up Hockey Team. He was named to the All-State team in lacrosse his senior season. Matt continued his academic and athletic career at Adrian College where he played NCAA Division III Lacrosse. He then transferred to play NCAA Division I Lacrosse at the University of Detroit Mercy. Gregson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Detroit Mercy. Gregson served as student/assistant coach for Powers Catholic Lacrosse in 2007 and 2008. Powers Catholic is delighted to announce our new 2024-25 Girls Head Lacrosse Coach Adrienne Kane (Goggins). Adrienne is an ’02 graduate of Powers Catholic and was an accomplished three (3) sport athlete in swimming, softball and lacrosse. She was a member of the ’02 All State Lacrosse Championship Team and named the ’02 All State Goalie. Assistant Coach Katie Salem was Adrienne’s Teammate and was named ’02 All State Attack. Adrienne continued her education at Grand Valley State University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications. She is married to Patrick Kane ’01 Powers graduate. They have three (3) children Wyatt (13), Henry (8), and Maxwell (7). All three (3) boys play lacrosse for Powers feeder program Flint Chargers. B/G Varsity BowlingLast night both teams were in action at Grand Blanc Lanes as we faced Saginaw Heritage.The girls won to improve to 2-0 on the season, winning 21.5-8.5. They won the first baker game along with baker totals and took both team games. Freshman Payton Swanson led the way for the girls with a 158 and 177 along with senior Gabbie Peel with a 148 and Junior Kaylee Jones with a 146.The boys won their match, improving their record to 1-1. They took both baker games and team games winning their match 28-2. Boys were led by junior Alex Bissett with a 252 and 179, Senior Lincoln Zuwala with a 215 and 198 and Senior Michael Teuber with a 244.Our next matches will be on 01/04/25 when both teams have a double header. The earlier match begins at 1pm at Northern Lanes where we'll take on the Midland High Chemics. The later match will be at Monitor Lanes against Saginaw United.

Boys Varsity BasketballPowers used a season high point total to knock off Plymouth Christian in Tuesday night action 95-55. 6 Powers players scored in double figures on the night, led by Javontae Ross with 21 points and 9 assists. Andrew Caldwell added 19 points. Breckin Cicalo scored 12 points. James Dean scored 11 points and Jesse Cull and Danny Wolak each scored 10 points a piece. Wolak added 6 rebounds. The Chargers made 17 3s on the night. The next game will be Friday night at Groves high school at 5:00 vs. Riverview Gabriel Richard.

With a 62-55 victory the Chargers were paced in scoring by Junior Kendyl Smith with 24 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals. Freshman Evah Smith made her debut for the Chargers with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Paige Ringwelski helped contribute 10 points for the Chargers. “I thought we had a good night overall. Clarkston is a tough opponent and they’re going to win a lot of games this season. Aaron does a great job with his team and had them prepared to compete. Boys Varsity SoccerWearing the number 5 on their wrists to honor ailing teammate Tino Jamison and with everything on the line, the Powers Chargers rallied together for a hard-fought victory over the tenacious Imlay City Spartans. It was a well-deserved and emotional win for the boys. The game's only goal came just six minutes in. Senior Leo Stravato found an opening on the right side of the box but, under heavy defensive pressure, opted to pass left to a streaking Logan Johnson, who buried the shot! It was a brilliant display of teamwork that secured the win. The rest of the match was a defensive battle. Imlay City fended off several scoring opportunities, but a shout out goes to our keeper, Armando Lopez, for making key saves, and to our back line, who fought hard to preserve the shutout. Next up is the regional final on Friday night, October 25th, at 6:30 p.m. at Atwood Stadium. Let's show up and support the team! Go Chargers!

Boys Varsity SoccerThe fall weather in Michigan has been perfect for playoff soccer, and the Powers Varsity Boys took advantage and captured the district championship yesterday with a decisive win over the Laingsburg Wolfpack. It was a true team effort, with every player contributing on the field. The first half saw Powers dominate possession. Junior Regan Cameron opened the scoring with a high-arching shot just under the crossbar at the 15-minute mark. Five minutes later, he scored again with high banger from distance, making it 2-0. Senior Leo Stravato then added a fantastic goal, striking a strong waist-high pass out of mid-air. Stravato capped off the half with another goal. The second half began with Junior Logan Johnson finding the back of the net and completing the day’s scoring at 5-0. Despite a strong performance, our varsity soccer team fell to Notre Dame Prep, the top-ranked team in the division. The game was evenly contested, with the first half ending 0-0. The second half saw similar tight play until Notre Dame Prep managed to score at the 28:30 mark, securing the only goal of the match. Powers fought valiantly to find an equalizer but couldn’t break through. It was a hard-fought game by both teams. Our next challenge is at Midland High on Wednesday, August 28th, at 6 pm. Perfect weather set the stage for a thrilling game that saw Powers varsity soccer team edge out Detroit Catholic Center (DCC) in a high-scoring spectacle. The first half saw Powers seemingly cruising with a commanding 3-0 lead, but the second half turned into an absolute roller coaster with a total of 7 goals scored between the two teams! A huge shout-out to sophomore Mason Mather, who delivered a standout performance with 5 goals. Center back Colin Johnson also contributed with a crucial goal for Powers.
